2014 January - Zion National Park
A two day trip to Zion National Park. First (half) day we walked just a short path - Emerald pools trail(s), the second day an entire day hike climbing to the top of the canyon and then back down.
What I learned from this trip: Canyons are very hard to photograph, as the contrast between the in-the-sun mountain tops and the in-the-shadow base is very high (on a sunny day). I had, unfortunately, a small camera whose sensor was not that great, so most of the pictures have completely blown highlights (I know, the photographer counts, not the gear, but I didn't know better). I also didn't realise this during the hike; next time… :)
Also, the very vertical landscapes were hard to capture with my camera; the lens I had was 11mm/1 inch sensor, so 35mm equivalent is a not-quite-wide ~30mm. Yep, I was quite unprepared for this trip (made as an addition to a business trip in this general part of US).
In any case, after fighting a lot with post-processing, I'm happy with the memories; but I'd like to go back once more, and do a few more hikes in the area, as it's very nice. Definitely recommended!
